For the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010, the world is in greater peril than ever, but there is also unprecedented opportunity to build a new future. Earth Day has the power to bring about historic advances in climate policy, renewable energy and green jobs and catalyze millions who make personal commitments to sustainability - A Billion Acts of Green™ – mobilizing the power of people to create change by taking small steps in our homes, our schools and our businesses that add up to an enormous collective action.
Earth Day 40 is a pivotal opportunity for people, corporations, and governments to join together to create a global green economy. Our coordinated efforts now will be recognized by future generations as a turning point.

Energy Efficiency - tips for saving electricity...save environment
Energy efficiency is the low hanging fruit of greenhouse gas reduction. By taking a little care with how we use electricity, we not only lighten the load on the environment, but save cash too.
Electricity saving example: computers
I'm writing this by the light of a 1 watt LED lamp and on my laptop with power saving features switched on - using 50 watts per hour maximum. Back some years ago, I would have been basking under the light of a powerful incandescent globe and using a desktop computer with a 17" CRT screen - around 300 watts all told.
So what do those savings come to in terms of carbon emissions?
The following are some rough calculations based on coal fired power generation for just the computer aspect.
Laptop = 50w x 10 hours a day x 365 days = 182.5 kilowatts
Desktop = 300s x 10 hours a day x 365 = 1095 kilowatts
A huge difference as you can see and in terms of carbon emissions, the savings by using a laptop are around 1500 rupees annually for me - well over half a ton.

The Green Economy Initiative
About GEI
The Green Economy Initiative (GEI) is designed to assist governments in “greening” their economies by reshaping and refocusing policies, investments and spending towards a range of sectors, such as clean technologies, renewable energies, water services, green transportation, waste management, green buildings and sustainable agriculture and forests.
Greening the economy refers to the process of reconfiguring businesses and infrastructure to deliver better returns on natural, human and economic capital investments, while at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions, extracting and using less natural resources, creating less waste and reducing social disparities.
Initially envisioned as a two-year project, the GEI has been expanded to include a number of related UNEP and UN-wide initiatives focused on providing macroeconomic evidence for significantly increasing investments in the environment as a means of promoting sustainable economic growth, decent job creation, and poverty reduction.
GEI activities include providing advisory services to countries interested in greening their economies, producing research products, such as The Green Economy Report, The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity series of reports, and the Green Jobs Report, and engaging partners to effectively promote and implement green economy strategies.

CUT SHORT YOUR DAILY ROUTINE TO MAKE ENVIRONMENT GREEN
DAILY ROUTINE AT HOME: your little effort make big RETURNS
1. It would seem to go without saying, but many of us forget that we can save water in simple ways like not letting the tap run while shaving, washing your face, or brushing your teeth.
2. Using an electric razor or hand razor with replaceable blades instead of disposable razors goes a long way to cutting back on waste. And plant a tree.
3. Use towels for drying your face and hands instead of tissues that are used and thrown away. Also, hang your towels to dry so that they can be reused several times. You are after all clean when you use them!
(this is our little initiative to protect our environment to give big returns, we name this message service as DAILY DOSE OF THREE. we will also publish some list of dose tomorrow.)
